Project: Boston Rare Books Library
The Boston Rare Books Library project was developed in three phases: architectural, structural, and mechanical. During the architectural phase, we proposed a building form, a series of floor plans, and an accessible roof based on a provided program with square footage requirements and, building codes and zoning regulations. In addition, our group developed a second skin facade system as a solar shading strategy to limit heat gain and protect the rare books while allowing for daylight. The second, structural phase, required analytical site and soil analysis to correctly choose a foundation system and meticulous load and span calculations to determine framing sizing and design. In the final mechanical phase, our group chose and designed an HVAC system and plumbing, mechanical, and electrical building systems to serve the required occupancy and building classification. The final project is a fully functional building with a comprehensive architectural, structural, and mechanical drawing set.
